MONHEIM AM RHEIN, Germany–(BUSINESS WIRE)–OQ Chemicals announced the introduction of a company-wide sustainability program at a renowned industry event AFPM International Petrochemical Conference (USA). With the primary aim of sustainably reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the so-called “reduce” program has set clear targets for OQ Chemicals to become climate-neutral by mid-century.
“In 2019, we began to systematically challenge our existing approaches. We are now taking decisive steps to increase the sustainability and future competitiveness of our business,” says Oliver Borgmeier, CEO of OQ Chemicals. “With ‘reduce’, we are taking up the challenge of significantly reducing our greenhouse gas emissions over the next few years through a strategic, company-wide and fully comprehensive program. Our goal is clear: to become a climate-neutral company until the middle of the century, i.e. until 2050 – or even before,” continued CEO Borgmeier.
Christoph Balzarek, EVP Corporate Development at OQ Chemicals and head of the global program to “reduce”: “This program is the result of a process launched already years ago, bringing together all our activities under one roof. It represents both a very structured approach and a clear roadmap towards our goal of climate neutrality.
“Although this long-term goal is about two decades away, we are already in the process of implementing it,” adds Balzarek. “Concrete measures for the coming years are clearly defined and intermediate objectives are in sight. With 2017 being the baseline year, OQ Chemicals will reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 18% until 2025 and by 30% until 2030.”
OQ Chemicals is supported by EFESO Consulting, an international group specializing in operations strategy and performance improvement. Marcia De Troyer, vice-president of EFESO: “Along the global value chain, chemical companies are defining their path towards climate neutrality. In this environment, we consider “reduce” to be a very structured, detailed and therefore effective program. As a goal, ‘mid-century’ seems vague, but with such a structured and pragmatic approach that OQ Chemicals pursues, we believe that the goal of climate neutrality must be achieved before the year 2050.”
The “reduce” program is based on the standards of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and concerns direct emissions from production activities (Scope 1), emissions based on energy consumption (Scope 2), as well as indirect emissions from OQ Chemicals , for example related to raw materials. materials, processing, transportation and marketing of products, as well as leased assets, purchased goods and services (Scope 3).
“reduce” covers all aspects of the business related to emissions, from supply chain and purchasing to operations, marketing and sales. The program includes all of the company’s production sites, initially focusing on the main sites in Oberhausen (Germany) and Bay City (USA), the former being subject to the quota trading system emissions (ETS) of the European Union. “reduce” consists of seven work streams, including a “breakthrough” work stream for innovation strategy and processes that also helps identify technological leaps and successfully pilot pilot projects.
