Masters Program for Expatriates to Enhance Engineering Expertise

Vietnam has become a popular destination for higher education with a wide range of study disciplines. According to a recent UNESCO Institute of Statistics database, Vietnam has attracted more than 8,000 international learners from all over the world. More and more universities are developing study programs taught in English, which are not only suitable for English-speaking learners, but also help to improve the quality of national education and the study environment.

The internationalization of Vietnamese higher education has been widely sought after by top universities. Among the various endeavors, running study programs in English is the most popular. However, when it comes to engineering disciplines, there are not many options.

As opportunities for expatriates to master their engineering expertise, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT) at Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) has launched its programs International Masters Programs (BK-IMP) in early 2019 with three cutting-edge engineering fields – construction management, telecommunications engineering, petroleum engineering – and rolled out two more study areas in 2020 – computer science, major in cybersecurity, and business administration geared towards innovation and entrepreneurship.

In 2021, HCMUT has expanded another major for computer science: data science, which is one of the “hot researches” in the fields of work and study.

BK-IMP also aims to provide professional management education to engineers who seek intensive professional and practical knowledge in their disciplines, as well as essential skill sets to become potential managers.

In 2019, HCMUT started to implement a project called Collaborative Education Program for BK-IMP Master in Construction Management, sponsored by JICA for AUN/SEED-Net. The project also has the participation of Yokohama National University (YNU, Japan), Yangon Technological University (YTU, Myanmar), JFE Steel Corporation (Japan).

During this project, the consortium attracts ASEAN students to join, study and research cooperatively on challenging topics. In addition, the consortium is developing a dual degree between HCMUT and YNU, as well as expanding the network of partner universities to improve learners’ practices and knowledge during their BK-IMP studies.
