NGMC Trauma Program Manager Wins National Nursing Leadership Award

The trauma program manager at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville is recognized by her peers for her leadership style and innovation. The Society of Trauma Nurses presented its annual National Leadership Award to Jesse Gibson.

Gibson was nominated for the award by NGMC Trauma Program Coordinator Jackie Payne.

“As a leader, Jesse understands that his team and partners are critical to the success of a trauma system,” says Payne. “Jesse leads by example. She is highly respected in her department, in our organization, in the community, and throughout the region, state, and nation.

The STN Leadership Award is presented annually to an individual who demonstrates leadership in trauma at the local, state and national levels. Over the past year, Gibson and his team have implemented and supported a wide variety of projects aimed at improving care at Gainesville Hospital, including reducing the length of stay in the intensive care unit surgical trauma and the establishment of a new intermediate care unit for surgical trauma patients.

Most recently, Gibson spearheaded a successful initiative that was nationally recognized, according to the hospital. The regional pre-hospital blood products pilot project has gained support as a new blood transfusion program that increases the chances of survival for trauma patients by placing blood products in ambulances, so that first responders can provide transfusions at the scene or on the way to the hospital. Now they are working to determine if this program can be replicated statewide.

“I’m so honored to receive this award,” Gibson said. “It’s such a pleasure to serve our community, and I’m so grateful to our team for their incredible work over the past year.”

The award was presented to Gibson on Thursday, March 31 during the opening session of TraumaCon 2022 – STN’s national convention in Las Vegas. The Professional Society Awards Committee selected Gibson to receive the honor among other national nominees. The group’s board of directors approved his selection unanimously.

NGMC is one of the largest hospitals north of Atlanta and is a Level II trauma center, treating over 2,400 patients with traumatic injuries each year.
