Puget Sound Energy Launches RNG Program
Puget Sound Energy announced the launch of a voluntary Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) program, a key part of its proposed path to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2045. Through RNG, tenants, owners and businesses can replace some of their conventional natural resources. gas consumption with carbon-neutral renewable natural gas.
PSE’s RNG program will provide utility customers with the ability to replace an equal amount of their conventional natural gas consumption with renewable natural gas. For each block of RNG a customer buys, they see a credit on their bill for an equivalent amount of unused conventional natural gas. Already, more than 1,200 PSE customers have registered for the RNG since its launch in December 2021.
RNG supply comes exclusively from a long-term contract with Klickitat Public Utility District. Methane from a Washington landfill is captured, transformed into renewable natural gas and added directly to PSE’s natural gas system.
“PSE appreciates the opportunity to partner with Klickitat Public Utility District to help turn methane from this landfill into a refined source of fuel,” said Will Einstein, director of new product development at PSE. “RNG offers our customers another way to reduce their carbon footprint and productively use renewable natural gas in their homes and businesses.”
As part of PSE’s ambitious Beyond Net Zero Carbon goal, PSE aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions for natural gas used in customers’ homes and businesses by 2045, with an interim reduction target of 30 % of emissions by 2030. channeled energy — are essential to ensure customers have reliable, affordable and clean energy, especially during peak demand, such as a cold winter day. RNG is a key part of PSE’s strategy to reduce carbon emissions, as is the development of clean fuels like hydrogen.

How RNG Works
PSE gas customers can purchase up to three blocks of GNR for $5 per block. Each block is equivalent to 3.2 therms of conventional natural gas use, or about 5% of the average residential customer’s monthly gas use. Customers receive a small bill credit – about $1 per month – per block for the cost of the conventional natural gas they replace.
What is Renewable Natural Gas?
The decomposition of plant and animal matter in waste dumps, water treatment plants, livestock farms and the like produces methane gas that can be turned into pipeline quality and used as a replacement for conventional natural gas.
